Available in USI’ll be honest — I marked Mbappé for the Golden Boot at the start of the tournament and I never wavered. He finished with 10 goals to take the 2026 Golden Boot, became the first player to win the award at two World Cups (2022: 8, 2026: 10), and broke Messi’s all-time World Cup goals record in the process. He did it in a French side that finished fourth after the 6-4 bronze-final loss to England. That last part is the part a punter has to sit with. All figures as at 18 July 2026 (ET).

How the record was sealed
Mbappé went into the bronze final needing two goals to pull clear of Messi on 8. He got both in a 4-6 loss that doubled as the highest-scoring World Cup match since 1982. The Fox Sports Australia call of the night summed it up: "Mbappé has capped off a stellar World Cup by claiming his second Golden Boot award … He is the first ever player to claim a second Golden Boot, having previously won the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar." France’s route through the tournament had its rough edges (a fractious win over Paraguay in the heat, the earlier bronze-final loss), but Mbappé kept scoring: braces against Senegal, Iraq and Sweden, single goals against Morocco and Paraguay, then the two-goal closer against England.
The market that never moved
The Golden Boot was the cleanest favourite of the tournament. Mbappé closed ~1.04 (−2500) on the eve of the final; Messi, the only realistic threat, was 13.0. By the time the bronze final kicked off in Miami, the Boot was already effectively decided — Messi had been held scoreless in the final against Spain and could not close the gap. If you backed Mbappé at the start, you took the short price and watched the value drain away. If you backed him each-way at a books that offered it, you got the win. The bigger story is that Mbappé is now top of the all-time World Cup goals list with 22 in 22 matches — past Messi’s 21, past Miroslav Klose’s 16, past Ronaldo’s 15. That record is the one his legacy will be measured on.
My ratings on the individual tournament
- Mbappé, the player: 9.5/10. The Boot, the all-time record, the Bronze Ball. France lost the bronze final and he still won two of the three individual awards on offer.
- Mbappé, the team’s tournament: 5/10. A 4th-place finish for a side many had in the final is a disappointment regardless of the individual numbers.
- The market: 7/10 for value. A 1.04 favourite delivered, but it was never going to make anyone rich. The interesting Boot market was the runner-up — Haaland and Bellingham both finished on 7, Kane and Dembélé on 6, Oyarzabal on 5. If you took any of those at 50.0+ to win the Boot, your only return was a small each-way place.
- The Messi “kept the record” narrative: 1/10. He didn’t. He lost both the all-time record and the Golden Boot in the same tournament.
Expert Verdict
The headline from this tournament for any individual-bet punters is the Mbappé/Messi dynamic. The market priced Mbappé as a near-certainty and got it right; it priced Messi as the Golden Ball favourite and got it badly wrong. From here, the Boot market is the easier of the two to read at the next World Cup — start with the obvious strikers, fade the playmakers.
